Behind every Oxford college's ability to weather uncertainty lies the same quiet force: its endowment. Built up over centuries at most colleges, an endowment acts as a financial shock absorber — protecting institutions from economic downturns and freeing them to invest confidently in students, teaching, and research.

St Catherine's story here is a shorter one, but no less significant. In just decades, the College has grown and carefully managed its endowment to approximately £101 million — an achievement that places it at the median across the Collegiate University, yet still far behind long-established colleges such as St John's (£691 million), Christ Church (£684 million), and Magdalen (£667 million).

The gap matters. Colleges with larger endowments are better equipped to absorb financial shocks — as seen clearly during the Covid-19 pandemic — while continuing to fund fellowships and offer students robust practical and financial support.

For St Catherine's, the endowment has never mattered more than it does right now. As the College confronts the costly and urgent challenge of remedying RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) across its historic roof structures, a stronger endowment provides the financial footing needed to respond without compromising its academic mission.
